Year 5/6 Welcome a Very Special Visitor with WWII Memories

Year 5/6 Special visitor WWII

Year 5/6 had an incredibly special visit today from Beryl, who is 94 years young! She came into school to share her memories of World War II, giving pupils the rare opportunity to hear first‑hand experiences from someone who lived through this important period in history.

Beryl was only 8 years old when Neville Chamberlain declared war, and she spoke vividly about how frightening it felt when the air‑raid sirens sounded. The children were completely captivated by her stories of everyday life as a child during the war.

To help bring the past to life, Beryl and her younger brother Les brought along a selection of well‑preserved wartime artefacts, including:

  • Original ration books
  • Photographs from the era
  • Air raid precaution leaflets

These items helped the children deepen their understanding of the challenges and routines families faced during wartime Britain.

The pupils asked thoughtful questions throughout and were truly inspired by her visit. What an unforgettable morning — and what an amazing way to see history come alive right in the classroom!

A heartfelt thank you to Beryl for sharing her remarkable memories with us.
