Year 1 Maths sorting lesson Autumn 25

This week in maths, Year 1 have been busy sorting and grouping — and they’ve done an amazing job! Using a variety of objects including shapes and bears, the children worked in pairs to sort items into two distinct groups, thinking carefully about what made each group different.

They explored sorting by shape, colour, and size, and used their oracy skills to explain their choices clearly and confidently. It was fantastic to hear them describe their thinking — using mathematical language and reasoning to justify how and why they sorted each item.

This hands-on activity helped the children to  practise speaking and listening through collaborative learning and build their confidence in explaining their ideas

Brilliant work, Year 1! Your sorting skills and explanations were impressive — keep it up!
