Exploring How Polar Bears Stay Warm – Reception Science Investigation

This week in Reception, we have been busy developing our Understanding the World, Science, and Communication and Language skills through a very exciting investigation!

The children have been thinking about a fascinating question:
How do polar bears stay warm in the freezing Arctic?

To explore this, we used our scientific investigation skills to predict, test, and observe what might help a polar bear survive in icy temperatures. We learned the new word ‘blubber’ and discussed how this special layer of fat helps keep polar bears snug and warm in their cold environment.

To bring our learning to life, the children created their very own blubber glove using a layer of ‘fat’. They then bravely tested it out by placing their hands into a bowl of icy‑cold water to see if the “blubber” helped keep them warm. The excitement and curiosity on their faces said it all!

This hands‑on experiment helped the children develop rich scientific vocabulary, practise explaining their thinking, and experience the fun of finding out through real scientific exploration.

The class had so much fun investigating, asking questions, sharing ideas, and discovering how animals adapt to their habitats. We are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm and growing confidence as young scientists!
