Castle Creators!
This term, our Year 1 and Year 2 pupils stepped back in time for an exciting Design and Technology project all about castles!
We began by exploring different castles and discussing their fascinating features. Which parts did we love? Which could be improved? The children had plenty of brilliant ideas!
Next came the teamwork challenge: building castles using a variety of construction kits. The classroom buzzed with creativity as groups worked together, using the correct vocabulary to describe turrets, battlements, and drawbridges.
Inspired by what we learned, we designed our own castles—thinking carefully about the features we wanted and the materials we’d need. The highlight? Learning how to make a working drawbridge! Using small boxes, string, and dowel, our engineers-in-training created moving parts that really worked.
Finally, we brought our designs to life with junk modelling materials, using clever joining techniques like glue, cellotape, and masking tape. To finish, we evaluated our masterpieces, reflecting on what we loved and what we’d improve next time.
The results? A classroom full of incredible castles and proud designers! Well done, Year 1 and Year 2—you’ve built a kingdom to be proud of!
